Aja Ekadashi falls on Ekadashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, and it is of special religious significance. This day belongs to Lord Vishnu. On this day, one receives salvation, virtue, and prosperity by observing a fast. This year, Aja Ekadashi will be celebrated on 29 August and it falls in special auspicious yogas.
He who observes a fast on Aja Ekadashi is gifted with happiness and prosperity. According to Padma Purana, it has been said that fasting on this day destroys all sins and attains salvation. It is considered as meritorious as Ashwamedha Yagna. One gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu by fasting on this day, and a person gets material happiness as well as spiritual advancement.
Aja Ekadashi’s date will start at 1:20 am on August 28 and will break at 1:38 am on August 29. However, based on the Udaya date, the fast of Aja Ekadashi will be observed on August 29. Siddhi Yoga and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga are also being formed on this day, which is a very auspicious time for fasting and worship.
Light and satvik food should be taken on the eve of Aja Ekadashi. On the day of fasting, one should get up early before sunrise take a bath, and clean the worship place. Light a lamp while worshiping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and offer fruits flowers and sandalwood. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama and chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay”. Eat fruits throughout the day and keep a fast. Worship at night also. It is considered auspicious to do Parana on Dwadashi Tithi only.
Aja Ekadashi has special significance for making donations. According to scholars, the best donation among all is that of grains and food grains. It is a great and meritorious occasion to donate to Narayan Seva Sansthan or other charitable institutions. Shrimad Bhagavadgita describes with clarity how this noble act is justified in times.
