Anant Chaturdashi, also popularly known as ‘Anant Chaudas’, falls on the 14th of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month of Indian calendars. It is an important day for the worship of Lord Vishnu, and if a fast is observed on this day, then infinite virtue is achieved. It is the last day of Ganesh Utsav wherein the Ganesha idol is immersed. Anant Chaturdashi in 2024 falls on 17 September this year.
Lord Vishnu is particularly worshipped on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. Observing a vrat on this day is said to provide infinite fruits for 14 years. In the mythological legend, Pandavas regained their lost kingdom by performing it. Tying the Anant Sutra with fourteen knots on this day has a special importance. This sutra is said to be a binding ligament of Lord Vishnu’s presence during puja and performing it in an orderly manner will bring about happiness and prosperity.
During puja, Anant Sutra should be placed in front of Lord Vishnu and worshipped. One should wear it on one’s right-hand side if he is a male, and his left-hand side if he is female. After doing puja, it is advisable to consume those fruits which will contain no salt so the fast will not remain incomplete.
There is a lot of mythological and historical essence in the story of Anant Chaturdashi. This is a story from the time of Pandavas where Yudhishthira approached Lord Krishna for his advice on how the wealth and kingdom lost during this period could be regained through fasting. Lord Krishna advised him to perform the Anant Chaturdashi fast which helped the Pandavas regain their lost wealth and kingdom.
There is another great legend with Sushila, who was the daughter of Brahmin Sumant. As soon as Sushila got married and kept a fast of Anant Chaturdashi, her husband Sage Koundinya neglected that fast. Due to that, their wealth was destroyed. Koundinya Rishi fasted for 14 years to amend his mistake and regain wealth by worshipping Lord Anant, which improved his life condition.
It is a lot more important in Jainism. It is the last day of Jain Paryushan; the Jain followers fast pretty much on this day of the month. It is also said that Lord Vasupujya was the 12th Tirthankar of Jainism, who attained Nirvana on this day of the month. Therefore, this day is significant among the Jain people also.
An important Hindu festival, Anant Chaturdashi, is a long-known ceremony of worshipping Lord Vishnu and Ganesha. Fasting on this day has brought in the attainment of infinite virtue and the religious belief that all suffering in life is wiped out. Tying Anant Sutra and immersion in Ganesha have also been important religious activities on this day. This day holds an equal position in Jainism as well and has been celebrated as the last day of the Paryushan festival.
