Jaun Elia, a.k.a. Syed Sibt-e-Asghar Naqvi, is a well-known Pakistani poet in the same league as Sahir Ludhianvi and Faiz, more so because of their leftist ideology.
Jaun Elia was a true proponent of the mystical Sufi style of poetry, which can be linked to his Shia background.
Jaun Elia was quite eloquent in many languages, which included Urdu, Arabic, Sindhi, English, and even Sanskrit and Hebrew.
Jaun Elia was born into a very knowledgeable and prominent Shia family in Amroha, India. His father was also a renowned scholar and, like Jaun Elia, was multilingual, with command over several languages.
Jaun Elia was the youngest sibling, and many of his cousins were prominent figures in the film industry, including Kamal Amrohi, who had given many classics such as ‘Pakeezah’ and ‘Razia Sultan.’
Jaun Elia often got into trouble for his leftist ideologies and strongly opposed partition. However, he later moved to Pakistan in 1957 and relocated to Karachi.
He was often derided for his Communist leanings and was once called an anarchist, a nihilist, but a poet by the prominent Pakistani daily Dunya.
He is also credited with enriching the Urdu vocabulary by introducing numerous Arabic and Persian words during the course of translating many historic works and discourses.
He is best described by poet Pirzada Qasim, who said:
“Jaun was very particular about language. While his diction is rooted in the classical tradition, he touches on new subjects. He remained in quest of an ideal all his life. Unable to find the ideal eventually, he became angry and frustrated. He felt, perhaps with reason, that he had squandered his talent.”
Like his compatriot Sahir Ludhianvi, he was deeply troubled by the working class’s trials and tribulations, and his pain can be felt in many of his works.
Here, we feature some of the best poetry (Shayari) from the legendary poet Jaun Elia, who has deeply moved both his detractors and lovers equally.
