Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on 24 November. This day remembers the martyrdom of the ninth Sikh Guru, who is popularly known as “Hind ki Chadar” due to his sacrifice and bravery. Guru Tegh Bahadur not only sacrificed himself for the Sikh community but also for humankind. He gave his life to protect freedom for religious reasons, human justice, and basic rights, which are still an inspiration.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was born on 1 April 1621 in Amritsar, Punjab. Guru Hargobind was his father, who was the sixth Guru of Sikhism. Guru Tegh Bahadur acquired the knowledge of God at an early age. He was religious and soothing from childhood. On 16 April 1664, he was appointed as the ninth Guru of the Sikhs.
Guru Tegh Bahadur traveled all over the country during his lifetime and established gurdwaras at many places. He also founded a city called “Anandpur Sahib”. His works are included in the Sikh scripture “Guru Granth Sahib”, which comprises 115 verses and hymns written by him.
The primary cause of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom was religious freedom. In 1675, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had issued an order for forced conversions. The victims of this repression, Kashmiri Pandits, sought refuge in Guru Tegh Bahadur and vowed to devote his life to protecting the Pandits.
Guru Tegh Bahadur challenged Aurangzeb, saying, “If you can convert me to Islam, others will also accept it.” For this courageous step, he was arrested and brought to Chandni Chowk in Delhi. After being kept in prison for 4 months, extreme torture was done on him. Three of his disciples were also martyred before him.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was hanged to death in Chandni Chowk on 24 November 1675. The spot is still known today as “Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib”. Later, his head was brought by his follower Bhai Jaita to Anandpur Sahib and cremated.
The sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur inspires Sikhism and all religions. He fought for human beings, driving the message that every soul had the right to exercise his religion. His martyrdom was what gravely impacted the development of Guru Gobind Singh into further laying down the foundation of Khalsa Panth and the standardization of Sikhs to take up a cause of religion and justice.
On Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, people organize prayers, kirtans and langar at gurdwaras in memory of the day. The day honors his very distinct sense of religion, humanity, and justice. Special events are carried out at places like Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib.
