The birthday of Mahatma Gandhi falls on 2nd October every year; this day is celebrated all over India and is called Gandhi Jayanti. Today, we remember this day to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi whom we call the Father of the Nation. Gandhiji played an important role during India’s freedom movement by using only non-violence and satyagraha. His life and his principles are still motivating us today to walk in the direction of peace, truth, and justice.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in the state of Gujarat at Porbandar. His father, Karamchand Gandhi was the Diwan of Porbandar, and his mother, Putlibai, was a religious and conservative woman. Gandhiji’s early life was quite simple, but from childhood, he learned the importance of simplicity, truth, and righteousness.
The major objective of the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti is that of recalling and paying tributes to the life, thoughts, and efforts of the non-violent struggle of Gandhiji. Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in liberating India from British rule with the principle of non-violence and satyagraha in the freedom struggle. Life symbolizes simplicity, truth, and morality.
Schools and colleges are lined up with various events on Gandhi Jayanti. Students sing patriotic songs, orchestrate dramas, and prepare speeches according to the message of Bapu, truth, and non-violence. Various competitions also take place on this day, and students participate in it with sheer enthusiasm.
Gandhi Jayanti is also commemorated by the United Nations as the International Day of Non-Violence, which presents the global significance of the principles he followed for living a non-violent life. All government offices, banks, and schools are closed on this day. People decorate his portraits and statues with flowers, sing songs, pray, and light candles.
Gandhiji’s life and principles inspire all ages. He said, “My life is my message” and “The weak can never forgive, forgiveness is the virtue of the strong.” At times when the world is facing different kinds of conflicts, his teachings hold great relevance even today.
It is not only a day to remember the life of Mahatma Gandhi but also an opportunity for all of us to emulate the teachings and principles they lived for. It provides an inspiring moment in one’s life to enhance commitment toward peace, equality, and justice. Thus, the importance of celebrating Gandhi Jayanti is growing day by day, not only in India but across the world.
