Thanksgiving is an annual American holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. It traces its root back to the 17th century, when people from the tribes in America and the Pilgrims gathered together for the first good harvest. In fact, it’s also known as the “Day of Giving Thanks,” where a family and friends gathered, shared a meal together and thanked the blessings in life.
The Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving on 28 November 2024. As always, that day is an opener to the American holidays and stretches the festivity up to Christmas and New Year.
Thanksgiving has a long history that dates back to the early year 1621 when the first harvest festival was held at Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was in this time that the Pilgrims indulged in feasting and supper, which they had with the last surviving member of the Native American Wampanoags and Patuxet. These Native Americans taught them some tricks on agriculture and livelihood.
On the other hand, Thanksgiving was not on a fixed date at the initial stages. Rather, it became a norm to conduct the celebration on the last Thursday of November. The President of America, Abraham Lincoln, declared Thanksgiving a national event during the 19th century. It started in 1863.
In the year 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it to the fourth Thursday of November. This was towards hastening the Christmas shopping season and thus boosting activities in the economy. Since 1942, this is the tradition whereby Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
The tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday dates back to Puritan times. At that time, Thanksgiving Day often fell on a Thursday. The Puritan community shunned Friday as a day of fasting and Sunday as a day of worship. Therefore, Thursday was chosen as the day of thanksgiving.
Today, celebrating Thanksgiving on a Thursday means that most people get four days off. Friday is the “Black Friday” shopping opportunity, which makes it extra special.
Thanksgiving has today turned out to be a secular festival. The day is not just about gorging and drinking but has the spirit of charity attached to it. Many communities spend this day distributing food and offering free food. This day carries in itself the spirit of kindness, unity, and gratitude.
