The day is observed on November 11 every year and is a move to pay homage to all those military forces that have served in the United States of America’s military. It traces its origin way back from World War I when, at 11 a.m., an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany. was a tag affixed to November 11, 1918. The day was earlier known as “Armistice Day,” and was first declared officially by US President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. He called it an occasion to pay tributes to the valor and sacrifices of the soldiers of the nation.
The United States Congress voted in 1926 to formally end World War I; however, it did not declare November 11 a national holiday until 1938. Instead, it became “Veterans Day” only in 1954 when, following involvement with World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ organizations convinced the Congress to make the day a common holiday of commemoration for all American war veterans.
The Uniform Holiday Act moved it to the second Monday in November in 1968-a move which gave the Americans a three-day weekend but caused confusion. Many states continued to celebrate it on November 11, and it was only in 1978 that Veterans Day became permanently set back to November 11.
The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day is that Memorial Day is to remember and honor military personnel who have died while serving the country, and Veterans Day seeks to honor all living and those who may have died military veterans who had at any time served the military, during either war or peace. In 2016, the “Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act” has been made to make Veterans Day especially memorable, two minutes of silence to be held across the nation at 2:11 p.m.
Veterans Day is observed with parades, mass gatherings, and also closing businesses for a moment in compliance with them.
