Kajari Teej is also celebrated as Kajjali Teej, Saturi Teej, etc., and falls on the Tritiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada. This falls three days after Raksha Bandhan and five days before Krishna Janmashtami. This year, Kajari Teej will begin from the commencement of Tritiya Tithi on Wednesday, 21 August, and will continue till Thursday, 22 August. It is mainly celebrated to get the blessings of a child’s happiness and bliss in married life.
This festival of Kajari Teej is celebrated for childbirth. It especially holds great importance for women who pray for a happy married life and child happiness. The ladies decorated themselves and worshipped Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati on this day. In some places, the swing of Lord Krishna is decorated and Krishna bhajans are sung. According to mythological belief, it was on this day that Goddess Parvati met Lord Shiva for the very first time.
In the legend of Kajari Teej, the wife of a Brahmin fasted on this day. She asked her husband to bring Sattu, but he did not have the money. He decided to steal and entered the shop at night. The shop owner caught him, but seeing the miserable condition, felt pity and gave the Brahmin status, mehndi, jewelry, and money. According to this tradition, it is considered auspicious to recite the story of Kajari Teej.
This form of fasting and worship by women on Kajari Teej not only strengthens the married life but also prays for the happiness of children, and the well-being of the family. Especially on this day, women observe fast for the long life of their husbands and pray for a happy life.
