Michhami Dukkadam is one of the most important festivals in Jainism, whereby people forgive others and seek forgiveness for themselves. Every year, on the last day of the Paryushan festival, people celebrate this. This falls on September 3, 2024, and this day is also known as Samvatsari. Michhami Dukkadam simply means “May all bad deeds be in vain.” It is a festival whereby people of the Jain community seek forgiveness for all sins which they might have committed knowingly or unknowingly.
The term Michhami Dukkadam originated from the Prakrit language, which is considered one of the major languages in Jainism. Most spiritual texts of Jainism are written in the Prakrit language. Paryushan is one of the great festivals for Jain people to purify their souls and wash out all negativity from their lives. Michhami Dukkadam makes this eight to ten-day festival even more sacred. But the main purpose of this festival is to seek and give forgiveness so that old mistakes can be forgotten, and relationships strengthened again.
For various Jain followers, Michhami Dukkadam is considered a day of self-purification, harmony within oneself, and harmony with all beings. On this day, Jains look back to past mistakes and vow never to repeat them. The day reassures the Jain concepts of non-violence, aparigraha, and non-attachment. The Jains observe fasting, meditation, and prayers to make the day even more meaningful.
According to Jainism, every living thing has a soul, so we seek forgiveness from all those whom we might have harmed in any manner. The harm may be through actions, words, or even thoughts. Thus, this festival becomes an excellent opportunity for spreading goodwill and protection and discarding ill feelings.
