National Epilepsy Day is celebrated all over India on 17th of November. The basic objective of this day is to make people aware about epilepsy, remove misconceptions associated with that disorder, and give social and mental support to the people who have been suffering from epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a neurobiological condition where there is disturbance in electrical activities within the brain, thereby resulting in seizures. Such a condition does not discriminate between age, race, or gender because it can affect anyone. Symptoms of the condition include shakings, unconsciousness, muscle twitches, and at times memory loss.
As per World Health Organization statistics, more than 50 million people suffer from epilepsy worldwide. Yet, ignorance and myths tend to haunt every single person related to this disease in the present day world; for example, linking it with ghost or considering it contagious.
For the first time ever, National Epilepsy Day was celebrated in India. Indian Epilepsy Foundation is its platform. It was founded by Dr. Nirmal Surya in the city of Mumbai. It aims to address the myths surrounding epilepsy, proper treatment to patients, and raising awareness. Mostly in the rural areas, many superstitions of epilepsy are still prevailing here; therefore, a very good cause on education and spreading awareness of this foundation.
As such, myths and misconceptions associated with epilepsy pose a challenge not only for the patient but also for their family. More often than not, the patient is ostracized from society, which makes them mentally and emotionally weak.
According to doctors and experts, a person affected by epilepsy needs proper treatment along with emotional support. Such patients should be taken to a doctor and superstitions should be avoided.
There is no permanent cure for epilepsy, but epilepsy can be well treated with medicines and other treatments. Taking their medicines at the right time and consulting a doctor regularly is very important to prevent epileptic seizures.
