National Testosterone Awareness Day is on November 17: a day to raise awareness regarding the magnitude of testosterone in the male body. Testosterone is the most significant hormone that readies, maintains, and sustains the bodily, mental as well as sexual health of a male. It provides strength and energy to each body part of men and this helps in keeping good health and vigor. The purpose of this day is to clarify the benefits of testosterone and raise awareness regarding the steps to be taken for this hormone to stay in its natural state.
Testosterone is one kind of steroid hormone mainly produced in the testicles of males. The role of testosterone in men entails controlling sexual development and how to grow muscles, bones, moods, and energy levels. It is as well found in women but in small quantities. The primary role of testosterone is their role in enhancing sexual characteristics in males by ensuring that the voice is deep, body hairs grow on the face and body, muscles grow and become large, and the genitals.
Testosterone is pretty vital not only in sexual health but also in mental and physical health. The hormone ensures that the strength and energy of men are well preserved, promotes the growth of muscles, helps to reduce body fat, and makes sure bones are strong. Testosterone levels impact a good number of functions in the body – mood, brain functioning, sexual intercourse, and intellectual capabilities.
With age, the masculinity hormone level has been recorded to decline by 1 to 2 percent each year. In most cases, this decline is quicker after age 30, and may lead to severe negative effects on both physical and sexual health. Low testosterone levels, for instance, cause lack of energy, poor muscle strength, high obese conditions, low sexual desire, and mental stress for men. Other than that, other modern lifestyles such as stress, bad diet, and harmful ways of living will also decrease testosterone levels.
In 1935, testosterone was discovered and it was the same year scientists synthesized it from cholesterol. This was the beginning of modern androgen therapy. First, they administered testosterone orally in the form of 17α-methyl-1-testosterone; however, it had hazardous side effects. Later, in 1939 Adolf Friedrich J. Butenandt and Leopold Ruzichka won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry due to their work on the study of sex hormones.
This led to the ‘Golden Age of Steroid Chemistry’ which lasted up to the 1950s. During this period there was still a lot of extraction and synthesis of testosterone and its derivatives. It was believed to be useful in men’s sexual desire, strength, energy, and muscle development and was called the ‘elixir of youth’.
In the 1950s, the injectable form ‘enanthate’ became the most significant medical and therapeutic application of testosterone. Further research focused on the chemical manipulation of this hormone for further repositioning with greater anabolic activities. During the 1970s, testosterone undecanoate entered the clinical androgens spectrum.
