Well-known singer Tulisa Contostavlos, in a candid interview on “I’m a Celebrity,” revealed that she is demisexual, and the admission left many viewers scratching their heads and wondering what demisexual means.
What is Demisexuality?
Demisexuality is a sexual orientation where a person experiences sexual attraction only after the building of a strong emotional bond with someone. In other words, such individuals do not experience crushes or get attracted to a person because of their looks.
Tulisa Contostavlos is a well-known singer and TV personality from the UK. She was in a conversation with her campmates on the show titled I’m A Celebrity and revealed that she is demisexual and has been celibate for more than three years.
Tulisa said,
“For me, it’s all about the connection and the emotions that I feel with someone and then wanting to express them in that way.”
Tulisa added,
“I’m properly guarded. I feel like I’m demisexual, I need to have a really close emotional bond with someone… I need actual depth. I’m a slow, slow burner. I’ve been celibate for over three years.”
A demisexual person can be straight, gay, or have any other sexual orientation and must not be confused with asexual people, who experience no sexual attraction, or allosexuals, who experience trivial sexual attraction.
However, even after the development of an emotional bond, it is not guaranteed that a demisexual person will develop sexual attraction. The term demisexual was first coined by a user on an Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) forum in 2006.
Demisexual people often do not get attracted to famous personalities or people with attractive looks and are often left wondering why they do not have feelings of any sort. Demisexuality is also different from sapiosexuality, where a person is attracted to the intelligence of their prospective partner, while the former is more attracted to the emotional depth in the relationship.
Experts opine that being in a relationship with a demisexual person requires a lot of patience because such persons wait for a long period before getting into a physical relationship, until the emotional bond is strong enough for them to feel attracted to someone.
They might or might not get into a physical relationship since sex is not important in their relationship. Demisexual people often opt out of the relationship if they feel that the emotional bond is not happening or is not strong enough.
