Women’s Equality Day is observed each year on 26 August to recognize the rights of women, their equality, and their struggles. This day does not only celebrate the achievements of women but continuously inspires them to improve their status in society and protect their rights through continuous efforts.
Women’s Equality Day emphasizes struggles and victories for women. This explicitly portrays the nature of the struggles many women have gone through to achieve their rights in society. The rights of women have been a matter of struggle for centuries in different world cultures. As a result, while in some socialization, women have equal rights, in many places still they have to struggle for their rights.
It is also a day that recognizes the strength of a woman, her struggles, and her achievements. Reminding us of women who dedicated their lives to advocating for their rights, this day was celebrated first in 1973. Thereafter, it is an annual affair each 26th of August. It is also equally significant because, on this day, women in the United States were given the right to vote.
The history of Women’s Equality Day is pretty inspiring and glorious. The day marked the 26th of August in the year 1920 when women in the United States won the right to vote. Every year since 1971, the United States Congress has declared it a day to be recognized as Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the day in history when women carried out massive movements for equality.
One important chapter in the history of Women’s Equality Day is 26 August 1970, when women went on a massive strike for equality. The central drive of the strike was to attain women’s right to vote. With 50,000 women taking part, they staged a march along Fifth Avenue in New York City, which was fronted by the major leaders then—an advocate for feminist writing and former President, Betty Friedan.
Taking this into consideration, Women’s Equality Day is observed to appreciate women’s equal rights, their struggles, and their attained success. It is a very important day to be observed for the cause of awareness regarding the respect of a woman in society and the protection of the rights of one.
This was and still is celebrated to make women equated in rights, in the recompense of their daily struggles, and to wake up the spirit of empowerment in society. This day reminds us of those women who sacrificed their lives in the fight for equal rights and won in the end.
