World Hello Day is an unofficial and secular holiday to be commemorated in more than 180 countries each year on November 21. The day spotlights personal dialogue and underscores its necessity for the preservation of peace worldwide. World Hello Day seeks to remind everybody that even dialogue can become a useful tool for peace, and it offers people all over the world an opportunity to participate in the peace-building process.
World Hello Day originated in 1973. It was born out of the Yom Kippur War, which happened between Israel and Arab countries in 1973. The war killed thousands of soldiers and innocent civilians, thereby raising world awareness towards the urgency to talk rather than to fight. Brian McCormack, a graduate from Arizona State University, in association with Michael McCormack, a graduate from Harvard University, thus came up with the idea of World Hello Day.
In the first year of the World Hello Day, these two brothers sent 1360 letters which were in seven different languages, and through those letters, asked the leaders of the world to participate in this action. In the first 12 months, they supported 15 countries. Today, this holiday is being celebrated in 180 countries, and its popularity and influence are constantly growing.
The main purpose of World Hello Day is to initiate positive communication among people and subsequently, for peace. In simple terms, this day can be done by saying “hello” to at least ten people. This day reminds us that even small interactions can bring about great changes and contribute to peace.
The idea of World Hello Day is that if we talk to each other and understand each other, we can bring peace and harmony around the globe. It is a small but important step toward building peace. Another purpose of celebrating this day is to meet people, especially those who are not like us, and establish dialogue with them.
World Hello Day has the support of many Nobel Peace Prize winners, authors, entertainment personalities, and world leaders. It has been seen many times that during World Hello Day people unite to overcome their differences and solve problems through dialogue.
This day highlights the importance since 31 Nobel Peace Prize laureates have defined it as an important tool for maintaining peace. In addition, this day advocates for the coexistence of various cultures in a more harmonious setting.
The simplest way of celebrating World Hello Day is by saying “hello” to at least ten people. You can do this to your friends, family members, and even strangers. It initiates dialogue as well as harmony and friendship among people with different cultures and countries.
You can also say “hello” in different languages, such as “Namaste” in Hindi, “Hola” in Spanish, “Bonjour” in French, or “Hello” in German-to make this day a little special. This way, you are not only increasing communication but also showing respect for other languages and cultures.
To add to this, if someone had a fight or disagreement with you for whatever reason, this is an opportunity for mutual communication. You can approach them and try to settle your differences through a good conversation.
